CCTV Regulations and Guidelines
Who CCTV legislation applies to?
CCTV is everywhere today and the UK is currently leading the world in its usage with some of the most advanced technology available today in use right here in the UK.
The public are accustomed to seeing CCTV in use on the street, on domestic properties and especially in commercial applications but this does not mean that CCTV can be used or installed without proper planning and without due care.
Most CCTV legislation for commercial use is covered by the Data Protection Act 1998. Images of people whether or not from CCTV are covered under this act, and so is information about people which is derived from images such as vehicle registration numbers.
DSW CCTV takes these guidelines extremely seriously and will never recommend or install a system that does not properly conform to the legislation provided. Our ongoing work with organisations such as the North Wales Police and Wrexham Crime-link is testimony to this fact.
We will advise you on every aspect that impacts under current legislation such as camera and monitor positioning, correct use of the equipment and storage of the data recorded.
ICO Guidelines for CCTV installations
The ICO set up by the government has published guidance to help anyone installing CCTV in a commercial environment interpret how the Data Protection Act applies to them.
We can provide you upon request should it be required, with a printed copy of this guidance along with a statement of how we ensure compliance.
Alternatively this can be downloaded as a PDF from the official ICO website or from our downloads section.
